Ranma ½: The Hidden Treasure of the Red Cat Gang is a classic JRPG based on Rumiko Takahashi’s iconic Ranma ½ manga and anime. Developed by Atelier Double and published by Toho exclusively for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System on October 22, 1993, it was the series’ first RPG (prior entries were fighting games) and only released officially in Japan, with fan-made English translations available later. The story follows protagonist Ranma Saotome, who—along with his father Genma—fell into cursed springs at Jusenkyo during a trip to China: Ranma turns into a girl when splashed with cold water, while Genma becomes a panda. When cat-like beings from the Red Cat Gang kidnap Genma, Ranma learns their leader, Shin'en, is hunting an ancient treasure to become the Cat Demon King and rule the world. To save his father and stop the plot, Ranma sets off on an adventure with his fiancée Akane Tendo, rival/friend Ryoga Hibiki, and the Amazon warrior Shampoo, who is smitten with him. Gameplay follows traditional JRPG conventions: players control Ranma and his party as they explore different areas and fight random enemies in turn-based battles. Characters can use standard attacks or special skills that consume "ki." The game faithfully adapts the original series’ curse mechanic—characters can shift to their cursed forms with cold water, which plays a key role in progression (for example, Ranma must turn into a girl to access certain areas). For Ranma ½ fans, the game delivers a rich story, plenty of character interactions, and captures the humor and adventure of the original series, making it a classic RPG worth checking out.
