Tag Team Match: M.U.S.C.L.E. (originally *Kinnikuman Muscle Tag Match* in Japan) is a 1985 wrestling game developed by Tose and published by Bandai. It launched for the Famicom in Japan on November 8, 1985, and came to North America in October 1986.
Based on the Japanese *Kinnikuman* manga and anime, the game was rebranded for North America (where the series was little-known) to tie in with the popular M.U.S.C.L.E. toy line.
It features 8 playable characters, each with a unique special move. Players can choose single-player mode against the computer or two-player mode against a friend. Controls are simple: the A button jumps, and the B button does a normal attack or unleashes a special move after collecting an energy ball. Energy balls are randomly thrown into the ring by a character named Meat, and players must grab them quickly to boost their power.
The game includes various wrestling moves like punches, jumps, flying kicks, pushes, Irish whips, flying attacks, chokeholds, and back body drops. While it can be played indefinitely, the official counter goes up to 255 rounds; after that, it resets to round 0 with speed and round duration refreshed.
In Japan, it sold over 1.05 million copies, making it the 4th best-selling Famicom game of 1985. Its gold special edition is considered a collector’s "holy grail," valued at around 2 million yen (about $18,200 USD) in 2017.
Overall, Tag Team Match: M.U.S.C.L.E. delivers a classic wrestling experience with its diverse roster and modes, standing as one of the defining titles of the Famicom/NES era.
