Illusion of Gaia (Japanese: Gaia Gensouki, also known as Illusion of Time in Europe) is a classic action RPG developed by Quintet. It was published by Enix in Japan in 1993, Nintendo in North America in 1994 (as Illusion of Gaia) and Europe in 1995 (as Illusion of Time).
The story follows Will, a teen with psychic powers. After his father vanishes exploring the Tower of Babel and a shipwreck awakens his abilities, Will is guided by the Earth spirit Gaia to stop a catastrophic comet and save the world.
Players explore real-world ancient sites like Inca ruins, the Great Wall, Angkor Wat and Egyptian pyramids, collecting hidden mystical statues — the key to halting the comet disaster.
Featuring a top-down perspective and real-time combat, Will can transform into the Dark Knight Freedan and the energy being Shadow, each with unique skills. Instead of a traditional XP system, players boost attack, defense or health by clearing all enemies in set areas.
Loved for its gripping story, deep characters and unique mechanics, the game features music by Yasuhiro Kawasaki, character designs by manga artist Moto Hagio, and a script by novelist Mariko Ohara.
A beloved blend of action, adventure and RPG elements, Illusion of Gaia delivers a rich, memorable gaming experience.
