Play Final Fantasy IV Advance (North American Version) - GBA
Game Introduction
Final Fantasy IV Advance brings one of the most beloved RPGs of all time to the North American GBA. Join Cecil, Kain, and Rosa in an epic struggle against the sorcerer Golbez. This port includes significant upgrades over the original 1991 release, featuring a completely redone English translation, the 'Lunar Ruins' post-game dungeon, and the 'Cave of Trials.' The strategic ATB combat and iconic job-based character system remain intact. Whether you are a veteran or a newcomer, this version offers the most complete way to experience the story of the Crystals on a handheld device.
Gameplay
Game Overview
Cecil is a dark knight and captain of Baron's Red Wings airship force, and after carrying out an order to seize a crystal he starts questioning his king and is stripped of his post, beginning a long road to redemption. Allies come and go, and the fighting moves from the surface world to the underworld and eventually the moon. Final Fantasy IV debuted on the Super Famicom in 1991 - released in North America as Final Fantasy II - and Tose handled this Game Boy Advance port, published on December 12, 2005.
Core Gameplay
This is the game that introduced Active Time Battle: the moment a gauge fills you commit to a command, and hesitation changes the fight. Roles are fixed - Cecil's sword, Rosa's white magic, Rydia's black magic and summons, Kain's Jump - so front and back row placement, elemental weaknesses and item use carry the tactics. This port displays the ATB meters right in the battle window, which makes the flow far easier to read.
Port Additions
The port builds on the WonderSwan Color version, which was based on the harder original script. Two dungeons are new: the Cave of Trials at Mount Ordeals, eight floors deep, holding strong weapons and armor for five characters the original rarely used by the endgame, and the Lunar Ruins, a multi-floor post-game dungeon that shifts depending on which character enters it, packed with lunar versions of the summons, the superboss Brachioraidos, and the scorpion-form Zeromus EG from the Japanese Easytype release. Once the Giant of Babil falls, Edward, Yang, Palom, Porom and Cid can be swapped into the party freely, with Cecil permanently locked in. A bestiary, a music player unlocked by finishing the game, quick saves outside of battle and a fully revised English script are also new.
Game Tips
- The origin of Active Time Battle, with ATB meters shown directly in the battle window here
- Fixed roles instead of job changes: Cecil's shift from Dark Knight to Paladin, Kain's Jump, Rydia's summons
- New Cave of Trials at Mount Ordeals, eight floors holding powerful weapons and armor for five underused characters
- Post-game Lunar Ruins: a multi-floor dungeon that changes per character, with lunar summons and the Brachioraidos superboss
- After the Giant of Babil, Edward, Yang, Palom, Porom and Cid can be rotated in, with Cecil always required
- Bestiary, a music player unlocked by finishing, and quick saves anywhere outside battle or dialogue
- Fully revised English script that restores cut plot details, with spell names back on Japanese conventions such as Thundara
Frequently Asked Questions
The main story takes roughly 25 to 30 hours. Clearing the Cave of Trials and Lunar Ruins and beating the lunar summons usually pushes it past 35.
It is built on the harder version of the game, so it hits noticeably harder than the North American Super NES release, and the Lunar Ruins trials demand tailored equipment.
It adds the Cave of Trials and Lunar Ruins dungeons, five swappable party members, a bestiary, a music player and quick saves, retranslates the script with restored details, and visualizes the ATB gauges; the graphics build on the WonderSwan Color assets.
Yes. Setting battle speed too high throws off turn order, some new weapons do not apply their bonuses, and battles can lag. The European release fixed these, so save states are recommended if you play the original US ROM.
No. Numbered entries tell standalone stories, so starting here costs you nothing in terms of comprehension.
