Ys III: Wanderers from Ys is a 1989 action RPG developed by Japan’s Falcom, the third entry in the Ys series. First released for the PC-8801, it was later ported to platforms including the Super Nintendo (SNES). Gameplay differs notably from the first two titles: it uses a side-scrolling perspective with stronger action elements. Players manually swing swords to attack enemies and use moves like jumping and crouching to navigate areas. Gear includes weapons, armor, and rings—each ring grants unique abilities but consumes ring energy, which must be refilled at town shops. Set over two years after the first two games, protagonist Adol Christin and his friend Dogi hear trouble has struck Dogi’s hometown of Redmont and set out to investigate. They find the town quarry overrun by monsters, with the village elder trapped inside. Adol rescues the elder and finds a mysterious statue in the process, then learns that Lord McGuire, the local ruler, plans to use such statues to revive the sealed demon king Galbalan. To stop this plot, Adol embarks on a quest to find the remaining statues and seal the demon king away. Ys III is also highly praised for its music: the original score was composed by Mieko Ishikawa, with additional tracks by Masaaki Kawai added to the X68000 version. Its music has been rearranged for later remakes, further boosting the game’s atmosphere and experience. Overall, Ys III: Wanderers from Ys delivers a fresh adventure with its unique side-scrolling gameplay and gripping story, making it a beloved classic in the Ys franchise.
