Romance of the Three Kingdoms II: Overlord of the Continent is a historical strategy simulation game released by Namco for the Famicom (FC) on June 10, 1992. As the sequel to Romance of the Three Kingdoms: Overlord of the Central Plains, it features significantly improved systems and graphics, offering richer content plus innovative internal affairs and warfare systems.
Set in the late Eastern Han Dynasty’s Three Kingdoms period, players can choose historical figures like Liu Bei, Liu Zhang, Sun Ce, Cao Cao, Ma Teng, Yuan Shao, or Dong Zhuo to begin their quest to unify the land. The game introduces a general experience and level system—generals grow stronger and boost combat power by gaining experience through battles. It uses a command token system: the more cities a ruler controls, the more commands they can issue monthly. Diplomatic strategies include alliances, sowing discord, and recruiting officers, while warfare emphasizes formation setup and tactical play, making battles highly strategic.
In 1998, Namco released a remake of Overlord of the Continent for PlayStation, further enhancing graphics and music. The game gained massive popularity in mainland China, serving as an introductory title for many players.
