Mr. Nutz is a 2D side-scrolling platform game published by Ocean Software in 1993. It first launched on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), then was ported to Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and Game Boy in 1994.
The game stars Mr. Nutz, an anthropomorphic red squirrel wearing shoes, gloves and a hat. Players guide him through six themed levels to stop Mr. Blizzard, a snowman who plans to turn the world into an icy land with magic.
In the game, Mr. Nutz can run, jump, swim and collect items. Attacks include jumping on enemies, tail strikes, or throwing collected nuts. Most enemies (except bosses) are defeated in one hit. There is no time limit, so players can freely explore each level to find hidden coins, health pickups and extra lives.
Notably, the game was developed by a two-person team: programmer Pierre Adane and artist Philippe Dessoly. They initially planned to make it for the Amiga, but chose to release it on SNES and Mega Drive/Genesis to fight piracy in the PC market at the time.
Loved by players for its beautiful graphics and smooth controls, Mr. Nutz is regarded as one of the great side-scrolling action games on the SNES. Its soundtrack, composed by Raphaël Gesqua, delivers a delightful audio experience.
