Seal of the Dark Lord is a classic retro RPG developed by Kogado Studio and published by ASCII. First launched on the MSX platform in 1987, it was later ported to the NES and other systems. Set in a fantasy world overrun by evil forces, the game follows a young hero tasked with sealing the wicked queen Terarin, who stole the Golden Seal, opened Pandora’s Box, and unleashed hordes of dark creatures that threaten world peace. During the adventure, players recruit three companions—Guy the warrior, Medi the Amazon, and Treo the pirate—to search for three keys leading to Terarin’s lair. To defeat her, players must also collect ancient mystical weapons and armor. The journey spans five distinct continents, where players explore villages, towns, and castles, buy gear and items, and gather key clues. They will also face various monsters, including evil merchants, cunning rogues, and giant lions. Defeating foes grants gold or items to boost the party’s strength. Featuring a traditional turn-based combat system, the game lets players attack with weapons or magic, or command allies in battle. It has a high difficulty level, requiring careful planning and resource management to overcome powerful enemies and complex dungeons. Beloved by many players, this classic retro RPG stands out for its rich story and deep gameplay.
