World Heroes is a 2D fighting game developed by Alpha Denshi (later renamed ADK) and published by SNK in 1992. It first launched on the Neo Geo MVS arcade platform on July 28, 1992, and was later ported to Neo Geo AES, Neo Geo CD, Super Nintendo, Sega Mega Drive and other platforms. The game’s story is set after scientist Dr. Brown invents a time machine and organizes a cross-time fighting tournament, inviting legendary warriors from different historical eras to compete for the title of the strongest fighter in history. In terms of gameplay, World Heroes adopts mechanics similar to other fighting games of the era, but the original version only uses three buttons: one for punching, one for kicking, and one for throwing. Players can perform stronger attacks by holding down the punch or kick button. The game also introduces a "Death Match" mode, where the arena is filled with various traps such as spiked walls, landmines, and burning ropes, adding excitement and challenge to the battles. There are eight playable characters in the game, namely: - **Hanzo Hattori**: Based on the Sengoku-era Japanese ninja Hanzo Hattori. - **Fuuma Kotaro**: Based on the historical Japanese figure Fuuma Kotaro. - **Kim Dragon**: A martial artist and movie star inspired by Bruce Lee. - **Janne D'Arc**: A female swordswoman based on the French historical figure Joan of Arc. - **Rasputin**: A philosopher and alchemist based on the Russian historical figure Rasputin. - **Muscle Power**: A character based on American wrestlers, with an appearance similar to Hulk Hogan. - **J. Carn**: A character based on Genghis Khan. - **Brocken**: A robot with extendable mechanical limbs and missile fists, with a design similar to characters from *Fist of the North Star*. The game’s final boss is Geegus, a robot that can transform into other characters and use their moves, similar to Shang Tsung from the *Mortal Kombat* series. World Heroes was a commercial success after its release, and is regarded as SNK’s response to Capcom’s hit 1991 arcade game *Street Fighter II*. Its success led to the release of the sequel *World Heroes 2* in 1993.
