Final Lap is a racing simulation game developed and published by Namco in 1987. It first launched on arcades, then was ported to the Famicom (FC) in 1988. Players drive 1987 Formula 1 cars from teams like Williams-Honda, Lotus-Honda, McLaren-Porsche and March-Cosworth. The main track is Japan’s Suzuka Circuit, with its layout and billboards faithfully recreated. The FC version differs from the arcade version: it adds more tracks and simplifies controls. It offers single-player and two-player split-screen modes. Players earn money from races to upgrade their car’s engine, brakes, tires and accelerator to handle rising difficulty. As one of Namco’s classic racing series, Final Lap was widely popular at the time and laid the groundwork for later sequels.
