Super Metroid is an undisputed masterpiece of the action-adventure genre, developed by Nintendo R&D1 and Intelligent Systems in 1994. As bounty hunter Samus Aran, players explore the sprawling, atmospheric planet Zebes to recover a stolen Metroid hatchling from the Space Pirates. The game is the blueprint for the 'Metroidvania' genre, featuring an interconnected map that rewards exploration with new abilities like the Grapple Beam and Space Jump. Known for its environmental storytelling, tense boss battles against Kraid and Ridley, and high degree of sequence-breaking freedom, it is frequently cited as one of the greatest games ever made.
