Game Introduction
Super Bomberman is a classic action game launched by Hudson Soft in 1993 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SFC). Its plot centers on two mad scientists, Mr. Karat and Dr. Muk, who kidnap Black Bomberman to create an army of evil Bombermen and take over Diamond City. After escaping, Black Bomberman teams up with White Bomberman to fight the villains and their robot forces. The game follows traditional Bomberman gameplay: players place bombs to destroy obstacles, defeat enemies, and find exits to advance. It has six worlds, each with eight stages (except the fifth world), ending in a boss fight. Running on SFC, it features greatly improved graphics and brighter colors than earlier entries. Since the first game debuted in 1983, the Super Bomberman series has spawned many sequels and spin-offs loved by fans. The latest title, Super Bomberman R 2, launched on September 14, 2023, for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. It retains classic gameplay while adding Castle Mode, a 64-player battle royale mode, and user-created level sharing with players worldwide. With easy-to-learn controls, varied level design and intense multiplayer battles, Super Bomberman is a timeless action game classic that still draws many fans today.
Gameplay
Game Overview
Super Bomberman is Hudson Soft's 1993 Super Nintendo entry in the Bomberman series. Two mad scientists, Mr. Karat and Dr. Muk, kidnap Black Bomberman and plan to clone an army of evil Bombermen to take over Diamond City. After escaping, Black Bomberman joins forces with White Bomberman to stop them and their robot forces.
Core Gameplay
The single-player campaign keeps the classic formula: drop bombs on a grid to break soft blocks, clear enemies, and uncover the exit hidden underneath. There are six worlds with eight stages each, the fifth being the exception, and each world closes with a boss. Power-ups for fire range, bomb count, kick and remote detonation let you chain explosions together, which turns slow clearing into a single sweep.
Multiplayer Battle
Battle mode is the real draw. Plug in a Super Multitap and up to four players share the screen, or fill the empty slots with CPU opponents. Obstacle layouts change from match to match, the last player standing takes the round, and the first to the agreed number of wins takes the match. Kick, soft block passing and remote detonation all change how you play, and cornering an opponent usually beats simply outgunning them.
Game Tips
- Six worlds of eight stages each in the campaign, the fifth being the exception, every world ending in a boss

- Two players can also join in on the single-player campaign
Frequently Asked Questions
The single-player campaign is about 2 to 3 hours. A battle round lasts two or three minutes, but matches tend to run all evening.
The early campaign worlds are friendly, while later bosses and dense enemy placement need memorising. Battle mode is pure mind games about who corners whom first.
The campaign has no cartridge save; you get a password after clearing stages and resume with that. Emulator save states work fine.
Not for one or two players. Three or four players on one screen requires a Super Multitap or a compatible multiplayer adapter.
The content is identical; the differences are the video standard and packaging language. This is a PAL release, so on an unmodified PAL console it runs at 50Hz and plays slightly slower than the NTSC version.
