Raid on Bungeling Bay (Japanese: Bangeringu Bei) is the first video game designed by Will Wright. It was initially released for the Commodore 64 in 1984, and later ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) by Hudson Soft in 1985. In the game, players control a helicopter taking off from an aircraft carrier, with the mission to destroy six factories spread across multiple islands belonging to the evil Bungeling Empire. While destroying the factories, players must fend off counterattacks from enemy turrets, fighter jets, missiles, and warships. The game features a full-scrolling 2D perspective, offering a vast battlefield for players to explore. As the game progresses, enemy factories continuously develop new technologies and build more powerful weapons to fight against players. Therefore, players need to destroy the factories quickly to prevent the enemy forces from growing stronger. The challenge of the game lies in balancing attack and defense while protecting your own aircraft carrier from being destroyed by the enemy. The NES version of Raid on Bungeling Bay sold approximately 1 million copies in Japan, far exceeding the 20,000 to 30,000 copies sold of the Commodore 64 version in the United States. Will Wright attributed this difference to the anti-piracy mechanism of the NES cartridge system and the fact that this game was one of the first American games released in Japan. Notably, while developing Raid on Bungeling Bay, Will Wright found himself very interested in the process of designing the game's level editor. This interest led him to further study urban planning and eventually develop the famous simulation game SimCity.
