Star Fox 2 is a shooter game co-developed by Nintendo EAD and Argonaut Games. Originally planned as the second entry in the Star Fox series for a 1995 release, it was canceled after completion and only launched officially in September 2017 alongside the Super NES Classic Edition. Compared to its predecessor, Star Fox 2 features a non-linear structure that lets players choose mission order freely, and uses a more advanced 3D graphics engine powered by the extra GSU-2 processing chip. Set in the Lylat System, the game has players reprise the roles of Fox McCloud and his teammates to fend off villain Andross’ invasion and protect the planet Corneria. Though Star Fox 2 was scrapped in 1995, many of its design ideas — such as lock-on shooting and multiple path choices — were carried over to 1997’s Star Fox 64. During the over 20-year gap between its cancellation and reannouncement, several early ROM builds of the game leaked online, though they contained numerous bugs and unfinished code. Overall, as a once-shelved title, Star Fox 2 still draws heavy player attention years later thanks to its innovative gameplay design and rich content.
