Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a historical strategy simulation game developed and released by Japan's Koei (now Koei Tecmo Games) in 1985. Set in China's Three Kingdoms period at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, players take on the role of a feudal lord, expanding their power gradually through internal affairs, diplomacy, and military means to ultimately unify China. First launched on the PC-88 platform, it was later ported to multiple platforms including PC-98, MSX, Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Amiga, and MS-DOS. In the game, players manage city grain reserves, fiscal revenue, public loyalty, and more, while recruiting and training generals, formulating strategies, and engaging in battles. Each general has unique abilities and traits, and using them effectively is key to victory. The success of Romance of the Three Kingdoms laid the foundation for the series, with sequels released continuously. By 2020, the series had sold over 9 million copies worldwide. Highly acclaimed in Chinese-speaking regions, Japan, South Korea, and other areas, it is regarded as one of the most influential historical simulation game series.
