Congo's Caper is a side-scrolling action platformer developed by Data East and released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1992. Its Japanese title is *Tatakae Genshijin 2: Rookie no Bouken*, and it serves as a sequel to the Joe & Mac series. Set in a fictional prehistoric world, the game follows Congo, a monkey who lives in the jungle with his partner Congette. One day, a mysterious ruby falls from the sky, transforming them into half-human, half-monkey beings. At the same time, a demon appears and kidnaps Congette, prompting Congo to embark on an adventure to rescue her. Players control Congo across 35 levels set in diverse environments including jungles, mountains, pirate ships, volcanoes, and ghost towns. Each level features unique enemies and challenges, such as dinosaurs, ninjas, pirates, mad scientists, and vampires. Congo’s primary weapon is a club, and he can jump, attack, and swim. Throughout the game, Congo collects rubies to power up: getting hit by an enemy reverts him to monkey form; one ruby restores his half-human form, while three rubies unlock Super Congo with special abilities. The game first launched in Japan on December 18, 1992, followed by releases in North America and Europe in 1993. It was re-released via the Nintendo Switch Online service on May 27, 2022. With its varied level design and unique transformation mechanics, Congo's Caper delivers a challenging and fun gaming experience.
