Space Invaders is a classic arcade game launched by Japan's Taito in 1978. Designed by Tomohiro Nishikado, it lets players control a laser cannon at the screen bottom, move left/right, fire bullets, and destroy descending alien invaders. Enemies have shapes like UFOs, squids, crabs, and octopuses; each cleared wave brings faster new enemies to raise difficulty. Four bunkers let players dodge enemy fire but get gradually damaged by shots from both sides. Regarded as the father of shoot 'em up games, it has deeply influenced later game design.
