Otogirisō is a horror-themed sound novel game released by Japanese developer Chunsoft in 1992. Named after the real plant Hypericum erectum (called "otogirisō" in Japanese), it draws inspiration from the eerie folklore surrounding the plant. Players take on the role of the protagonist, who gets into a car accident while driving and is forced to spend the night with his girlfriend in an abandoned villa surrounded by otogirisō plants, experiencing a series of terrifying events. The game is distinguished by how different choices lead to major shifts in the plot and character personalities, ultimately unlocking multiple distinct endings. After its initial release, Chunsoft launched an enhanced version *Otogirisō: Sosei-hen* for the PlayStation, which tells the other side of the story from the protagonist's girlfriend's perspective. The game has also spawned adaptations including novels and films.
