Game Introduction

Mega Man & Bass is an action game developed and published by Capcom for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System on April 24, 1998, and is regarded as a spin-off of the Mega Man franchise. The game features a dual-protagonist system, allowing players to choose between Mega Man and Bass. The two characters have distinct abilities and storylines, boosting replay value. Its level design breaks from the traditional linear format, using a branching tree structure split into two halves. Players must defeat first-half bosses and clear mid stages to unlock some later levels. In the story, Dr. Wily disappears after losing to Mega Man and builds a new research base to pursue his ambitions. However, the base is seized by a robot calling himself King, who steals robot data from a museum to form his own army and plot world conquest. Mega Man and Bass call a temporary truce to team up and uncover the truth behind the incident. The game also adds 100 special collectible CDs scattered across all levels. Collecting them unlocks corresponding character profile data, adding extra collection elements and fun to the gameplay. Overall, with its unique dual-protagonist setup, innovative level design, and rich collectible content, Mega Man & Bass delivers a fresh gaming experience and stands as one of the most beloved entries in the Mega Man series.

Gameplay

Game Overview

Rockman & Forte, released internationally as Mega Man & Bass, came out on the Super Famicom on April 24, 1998 and was Capcom's final release for the console. Dr. Wily's new fortress is seized by a robot calling himself King, who raids the Robot Museum and steals 100 data CDs holding robot schematics. Mega Man and Bass call a temporary truce and take on King's castle on their own terms.

Core Gameplay

You pick one character at the start and cannot switch later. Mega Man has the charge shot and slide, moves a little slower, takes less damage, and melts bosses with charged shots. Bass double jumps, dashes, and fires his arm cannon rapidly in seven directions, which makes stages easy but bosses slow going, since he takes more damage and hits for less per shot. The eight Robot Masters split into an opening three and a later five, with each early defeat unlocking part of the back half, and a Crystal Gate stage in between that needs all eight weapons to break through.

Japanese Release Notes

This is the original Japanese ROM, which never left Japan at the time; Western players waited for the 2003 Game Boy Advance version, Mega Man & Bass. Menus, dialogue and the CD database are entirely in Japanese, and boss names like Cold Man, Tengu Man and Ground Man are written in kanji, so non-readers lose most of what the database offers. The cartridge does have battery-backed saves, and any CDs you collect stay in the database across playthroughs and character swaps.

Game Tips

  • Pick one of two leads: Mega Man with charge shot and slide who takes less damage, or Bass with double jump, dash and seven-way rapid fire who takes more
  • Eight Robot Masters split into an opening three, Cold Man, Astro Man and Ground Man, and a later five, unlocked in stages
  • 100 data CDs are scattered through the levels, unlocking character database entries that persist across playthroughs and character swaps
  • After all eight masters fall you face the Crystal Gate, which needs each of the eight weapons to break the crystals
  • The finale is two King Castle stages: Atetemino Proto, then a run of King Tank, King Plane, King and Jet King
  • Weapons form a weakness chain: Cold Man gives Ice Wall, Burner Man gives Wave Burner, Tengu Man gives Tengu Blade
  • Support gear like Rush Search, Eddie, Beat and Treble Boost is bought at Dr. Light's lab instead of found

Frequently Asked Questions

One character route is about 2 to 3 hours. Collecting all 100 CDs requires both routes, since some are only reachable with one character, putting a completionist run past 8 hours.

Capcom deliberately pushed the difficulty up, and this is one of the toughest classic series entries. Bass makes stages easy and bosses painful; Mega Man is the reverse.

Yes. The Super Famicom cartridge has battery-backed saves that keep your progress and CD collection, and emulator save states work too.

Yes. It only ever shipped in Japan, so menus, dialogue and the CD database are all Japanese. The Game Boy Advance version, Mega Man & Bass, is the English option.

Not required. This game reuses Mega Man 8's character art and brings back Tengu Man and Astro Man, but the story stands on its own.
