R-Type III: The Third Lightning is a side-scrolling shooter released by IREM on December 10, 1993 for the Super Nintendo (SNES). As the third main entry in the R-Type series, it retains classic gameplay while innovating on weapons and level design.
Set during the Third Bydo War, players pilot the cutting-edge R-90 Ragnarok fighter deep into Bydo territory for Operation: The Third Lightning, tasked with destroying the Bydo core.
For the first time in the series, three distinct Force units are available:
- **Round Force**: The original Force with standard weapon loadouts.
- **Shadow Force**: Features unique weapon combinations and special boosts.
- **Cyclone Force**: Offers a brand-new weapon system and special abilities.
The Wave Cannon has also been upgraded, with Normal and Rapid Fire modes. Rapid Fire unleashes stored energy for a powerful 10-second burst, but requires a 12-second cooldown where charging is unavailable.
While the game removes the giant battleship levels from prior entries, its polished level design and innovative weapon system make it one of the series’ best. New elements like vertical and reverse scrolling add variety and challenge.
Widely praised at launch as one of the SNES’s top shooters, it is celebrated for its stunning visuals, excellent music, and high difficulty. However, it has never received a full, high-quality port in nearly 30 years—the 2004 Game Boy Advance port suffered from distorted audio, hit detection issues, and bugs. For the best experience, the original SNES version remains the ideal way to play this classic.
