Pin Bot is a pinball simulation game developed by Rare and published by Nintendo for the NES in 1990. Adapted from Williams’ 1986 pinball machine of the same name, it faithfully recreates the original gameplay and visuals while adding new elements and challenges. In the game, players’ main goal is to hit specific targets to travel through the solar system’s planets starting from Pluto, eventually reaching the Sun. Each successful hit on a designated target advances players to the next planet and grants special rewards during gameplay. Its core feature is a 5x5 light grid at the center of the playfield. Players hit targets above and to the right of the grid to light up its cells. When fully lit, Pin Bot’s visor opens, letting players lock the ball in the robot’s eye sockets to activate the two-ball multiball mode. In this mode, players can relock one ball and use the other to score via the left ramp, after which both balls re-enter play. Each left ramp score increases the Sun Value (jackpot), which accumulates across games. The NES version of Pin Bot faithfully reproduces the original pinball machine’s design and art style while introducing new gameplay elements and challenges. After earning the Sun bonus in multiball mode, the game scene changes, offering six distinct "level" experiences. While the playfield shape and target positions stay the same, color schemes and enemy types change as levels progress. For example, level 2 features a creature that tries to eat the ball; level 3 has a plane flying above the playfield carrying missiles that threaten the player’s flippers. Additionally, the game introduces a ball shape-shifting mechanic. As gameplay progresses, the ball changes from its original spherical form to a triangular wedge, then to a cube. Each shape is faster and harder to control, but the physics simulation remains consistent. Pin Bot received positive reviews upon release. Nintendo Power gave it a 4/5 rating, and Computer and Video Games scored it 90% in its March 1991 review. Overall, Pin Bot combines classic pinball gameplay with innovative elements, offering players rich challenges and fun.
