R.C. Pro-Am is a racing game developed by British studio Rare and released by Nintendo for the North American NES in 1988. Played from a top-down isometric view, players control an RC car to race against three opponents across multiple tracks. The goal of each race is to finish in the top three to advance to the next round. Tracks feature various power-ups and obstacles: collect items like speed boosts, engine upgrades, and super sticky tires to improve your car’s performance, while skillfully avoiding hazards like oil slicks and puddles to maintain speed and stability. The game also includes a weapon system—use missiles and bombs to temporarily disable opponents, adding strategy and fun to the races. Widely praised upon release, R.C. Pro-Am is regarded as one of the best racing games on the NES. Its unique top-down perspective and innovative mechanics inspired later racing titles such as Super Off Road, Rock n' Roll Racing, and the Mario Kart series. The game’s success led Rare to release the sequel Super R.C. Pro-Am in 1991, followed by R.C. Pro-Am II in 1992, expanding the content and gameplay further.
