Game Introduction

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is a classic action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. As the third entry in The Legend of Zelda series, it first launched in Japan in 1991, followed by releases in North America and Europe in 1992. Played from a top-down perspective, the game lets players take on the role of young hero Link, who sets out on a journey to save the kingdom of Hyrule. The story follows Link as he searches for the legendary Master Sword, confronts the evil wizard Agahnim, and ultimately defeats the Demon King Ganon to rescue the imprisoned Princess Zelda. The game introduces the concept of the Light World and Dark World; players must travel between the two realms to solve puzzles, challenge dungeons, collect items, and grow stronger. Widely praised upon release, A Link to the Past is regarded as one of the best games on the Super Nintendo platform. Its beautiful visuals, rich gameplay, and captivating story have made it a landmark action-adventure title. It has sold over 4.61 million copies worldwide, cementing The Legend of Zelda series’ iconic status in gaming history. In 2002, Nintendo remade the game for the Game Boy Advance, adding a multiplayer mode called Four Swords to expand the experience. All in all, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past remains a beloved classic for countless players thanks to its deep design and outstanding gameplay, and it is still widely discussed and enjoyed today.

Gameplay

Game Overview

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past launched with the Super Famicom in Japan on November 21, 1991 and reached North America and Europe in 1992, selling 4.61 million copies worldwide. Link has to free the imprisoned Princess Zelda, pull the Master Sword from its pedestal in the Lost Woods, get past the wizard Agahnim and finally face Ganon. Nintendo ported it to Game Boy Advance in 2002 with a four-player Four Swords campaign bolted on.

Core Gameplay

From a top-down view you collect the sword, shield, bombs, bow, hookshot, Pegasus Boots, Fire Rod and Ice Rod one at a time, and each new item reopens ground you already covered. Three pendants, Courage, Power and Wisdom, are required before the Master Sword will budge. Dungeon maps and compasses have to be found in chests, boss rooms and hidden caves are scattered across Hyrule, and four heart pieces add one more heart container.

The Light and Dark Worlds

Hyrule exists twice on the same grid: a pond in the Light World may be a swamp in the Dark World, a hillside may become a cliff. The Magic Mirror throws Link back to the Light World at any time, and trees or blocks that cannot be moved in one world often have to be dealt with at the matching spot in the other. The Moon Pearl is mandatory before entering the Dark World, or Link turns into a rabbit, and the seven maidens of the second half are held in seven separate dungeons.

Game Tips

  • Two parallel Hyrules on one grid, with puzzles that depend on how the Light and Dark Worlds line up
  • Magic Mirror, which bounces you back to the Light World at will and doubles as both a puzzle tool and an escape
  • The Master Sword, only obtainable after three pendants, firing a sword beam whenever Link is at full health
  • An item chain of hookshot, Pegasus Boots, Fire Rod, Ice Rod and Moon Pearl, each opening routes that were previously dead ends
  • Three Light World dungeons for the pendants, then seven Dark World dungeons each holding a maiden, capped by Ganon's Tower
  • Heart pieces hidden across the overworld, four of which add another heart container
  • The 2002 Game Boy Advance port bundles a four-player Four Swords campaign and a small amount of extra content

Frequently Asked Questions

The main quest runs about ten to fifteen hours, and collecting every heart piece and secret pushes it closer to twenty.

The cartridge is battery-backed and offers three save slots. Open the menu and choose save at any point.

Defeat Agahnim in Hyrule Castle and you are sent through. Get the Moon Pearl first, otherwise Link turns into a helpless rabbit the moment he arrives.

The GBA release adds the four-player Four Swords mode and an extra dungeon, with a fresh translation and a brighter palette. The original still wins on the pixel art and the sound of the Super Nintendo score.

No. This is a prequel with a self-contained story, so it stands on its own without the original or The Adventure of Link.
