Front Mission is a tactical RPG (SRPG) developed by G-Craft and published by Square (now Square Enix) for the Super Famicom on February 24, 1995. Set in a fictional 2090 world centered on Huffman Island in the Pacific, it follows the military conflict between the Oceania Cooperative Union (OCU) and the United States of the New Continent (USN). Players control giant mechs called "Wanzers" (from German "Wanderpanzer," meaning "walking tank") to battle and advance the story. Core gameplay has two main parts: pre-battle preparation and battlefield combat. Before battles, players can interact with teammates, assemble mechs in shops, and even compete in mercenary fights to earn money. On the battlefield, it uses a tactical grid map similar to Tactics Ogre. When mechs from both sides clash, the game switches to a battle screen, with outcomes determined by weapon performance. Its unique mech designs and gameplay earned widespread acclaim upon release, laying the foundation for future installments.
