Nintendo World Cup (Japanese title: Nekketsu Kōkō Dodgeball Bu: Soccer Hen) is a 1990 soccer sports game developed and published by Technōs Japan. After its Japanese release, Nintendo launched it in the U.S. and Europe under the name Nintendo World Cup. It was also ported to platforms like the PC Engine and Mega Drive, making it the only title in the Kunio-kun (Nekketsu) series released on Sega consoles. Versions for the Game Boy also launched in Japan, North America, and Europe.
In the Japanese version, players control a soccer team of 8 high school students competing in a tournament against 13 other schools. The U.S. version is set as a World Cup tournament between 13 national teams.
The story centers on Nekketsu High’s soccer club. After most members get food poisoning at a celebration banquet for qualifying for the national tournament, the club’s manager Misako and the only healthy member Takashi ask Kunio, the dodgeball club captain, for help. Kunio forms a new team with dodgeball club members to compete.
Carrying over the Nekketsu series’ signature over-the-top style, the game features various special moves and comedic elements. Players can use unique shots like the "Nekketsu Shot" and "Caterpillar Shot," boosting the game’s fun and replay value.
With its distinct style and rich content, Nintendo World Cup is regarded as a classic by many players.
