Final Fantasy IV is a 1991 role-playing video game developed and published by Square (now Square Enix), serving as the fourth entry in the Final Fantasy series. First released in Japan for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, it has since been ported and remade for multiple platforms. Since Final Fantasy II and III were initially unreleased outside Japan, this title launched in North America as Final Fantasy II, though later ports and remakes restored the original name. The story follows dark knight Cecil as he tries to stop the sorcerer Golbez from conquering the world, with party members joining and leaving throughout the journey due to death, injury, or other events. Final Fantasy IV introduced the Active Time Battle (ATB) system, an innovative mechanic that became a staple for the series and other RPGs. Unlike previous entries, each character has a fixed job class. Driven by character-focused storytelling, featuring new technical advancements, and boasting a beloved soundtrack composed by Nobuo Uematsu, it is widely regarded as a milestone for both the Final Fantasy series and the RPG genre.
