Final Fantasy IV is a 1991 RPG developed and published by Square (now Square Enix), the fourth entry in the Final Fantasy series. It first launched on the Super NES in Japan, later ported/remade to multiple platforms. Initially released as Final Fantasy II in North America (since FFII and FFIII never launched outside Japan originally), later ports restored its original title.
The story follows dark knight Cecil, who sets out to stop the sorcerer Golbez from seizing control of the world. Along his journey, new party members join, while others leave due to death, injury, or other events.
Final Fantasy IV introduced the Active Time Battle (ATB) system, a departure from the turn-based combat of previous entries. This system lets characters act at different times based on their speed stats, making battles more tense and exciting.
Widely praised for its deep story and well-developed characters, it is regarded as a landmark RPG. Its complex plot and dramatic storytelling set new standards for the genre.
The game has been remade and ported to many platforms, including PlayStation, WonderSwan Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, iOS, Android, and Windows. A 3D remake launched on Nintendo DS in 2007, followed by the sequel Final Fantasy IV: The After Years in 2008.
Overall, with its innovative combat system, engaging story, and deep character development, Final Fantasy IV is a classic in the Final Fantasy series and RPG history as a whole.
