Utopia: The Creation of a Nation is a real-time strategy and city-building game developed by Celestial Software and published by Gremlin Interactive in 1991. Initially released for Amiga, Atari ST, and MS-DOS, it launched on Super Nintendo in the US via Jaleco in 1993.
Players take on the role of a planetary governor tasked with building and managing a human colony on an alien world. Starting from scratch, you construct residences, hospitals, labs, mines, factories, shipyards, and more to meet colonists’ needs. Construction requires time, funds, and manpower, so you must allocate resources wisely to keep the colony growing sustainably.
Beyond city building, you manage taxes, population growth, and trade to boost colonists’ quality of life. Each planet has a rival alien race also vying to colonize the same world—you’ll gather intel on their movements and set up defenses to protect your colony from attacks.
There are 10 distinct planet scenarios, each with unique terrain, resources, and alien foes for varied challenges. The game uses isometric 3D animated graphics and supports the Super Nintendo Mouse peripheral for smoother controls.
Well-received at launch, it’s often called a blend of SimCity and Populous, offering deep strategy and management gameplay. Its success led developer Celestial Software to release a sequel, K240, which expands the colonization concept to asteroid belts and refines core mechanics.
