Kid Icarus (Japanese: Hikari Shinwa: Palutena no Kagami) is a platform action game co-developed by Nintendo R&D1 and Tose, and published by Nintendo. It first launched in Japan on December 19, 1986 for the Famicom Disk System, then released in North America and Europe in 1987 for the NES. Set in Angel Land, a fantasy world inspired by Greek mythology, the game follows Pit, a young angel warrior tasked with saving the goddess Palutena and all of Angel Land. To complete his mission, Pit must collect three sacred treasures—the Mirror Shield, Light Arrows, and Wings of Pegasus—and ultimately defeat the evil goddess Medusa. Featuring side-scrolling gameplay, the title blends action, platforming, and role-playing elements. Players jump, climb, and use a bow to attack enemies across intricate levels. Various rooms such as shops, treasure chambers, enemy lairs, and hot springs allow players to buy items, earn rewards, fight foes, or restore health. At the end of each major stage, players navigate maze-like fortresses and defeat bosses guarding sacred treasures to progress the story. Known for its unique gameplay and challenging difficulty, Kid Icarus received mixed reviews initially but has since become a beloved classic over time. Its soundtrack, composed by Hirokazu Tanaka, features memorable, melodic tracks. The game has been remade and re-released on multiple platforms, including the Game Boy Advance in Japan in 2004, the Wii Virtual Console in 2007, and the 3D Classics version for the Nintendo 3DS in 2012. As the first entry in the Kid Icarus series, it laid the groundwork for follow-ups such as Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters (1991, Game Boy) and Kid Icarus: Uprising (2012, Nintendo 3DS).
