Timecop is a side-scrolling action game developed by Cryo Interactive Entertainment and released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1995. Adapted from the 1994 film of the same name, it is set after the movie’s events. Players take on the role of time enforcement officer Max Walker, who hunts down criminal scientist Hans Kleindast—who misuses time travel technology—and fixes the chaos he causes in the timeline. The game features 15 levels set in diverse locations, including 1920s New York City, World War II European battlefields, and a futuristic Los Angeles. Most levels follow the standard side-scrolling platform action formula, where players use weapons and combat skills to defeat enemies and complete missions within a time limit. Some levels also include vehicle-based combat. The game uses digitized live-action actor graphics, though film star Jean-Claude Van Damme did not participate in the game’s motion capture. It received mixed reviews upon release: Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu gave it a score of 20 out of 40, while GamePro criticized its animation and design. Even so, the game retains a following among retro gaming enthusiasts for its unique digitized graphics and varied time-travel settings.
