Thunder Spirits is a side-scrolling shooter developed by Technosoft and released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SFC) on December 27, 1991. It is a port of the iconic Mega Drive shooter Thunder Force III. Known for its unique controls, vibrant visuals, extreme speed, and high difficulty, the Thunder Force series wowed players in the late 1980s and early 1990s with its multi-layer display system, delivering immersive high-speed scrolling that felt like an animated film. Units on different layers move at varying speeds and paths, creating a stunning overall effect. Players pilot the FIRE LEO-03 "STYX" fighter through diverse enemies and complex levels. The game retains the weapon switching system from its predecessor and adds a ship speed adjustment feature, plus multiple weapons and options like twin shot, sever laser, rear shot, wave laser, fire missile, and hunter orb, each with unique attack styles and effects. However, due to adjustment errors during porting, the SFC version is considered an inferior port of the original in some aspects. Still, as a port of a classic shooter, Thunder Spirits remains worth playing for its unique charm.
