Alcahest is an action RPG developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Square, released for the Super Famicom in Japan on December 17, 1993. It uses a top-down perspective, with gameplay similar to classic titles like The Legend of Zelda and Secret of Mana.
Set in the Kingdom of Panakeia, the game follows protagonist Alen on his quest to stop the evil demon god Alcahest from being resurrected. Legend says a swordsman sealed Alcahest a thousand years ago with help from four great guardians. Now, an ambitious emperor leads his imperial army across nations, seeking to conquer the world using dark power. During his journey, Alen meets five allies: young mage Garstein, princess Elikshil, knight Sirius, robot Magna, and shapeshifting dragon goddess Nevis. These characters join the party in specific stages to help Alen fight enemies.
The game has eight stages, each filled with various enemies and obstacles. Players must find items and power-ups to help Alen complete his mission, with a powerful boss waiting at the end of every stage. Alen attacks with a sword blessed by the guardians, and gains the power of one of the four elemental guardians after certain boss fights. Players can switch between guardian abilities to unleash different special attacks. Alen can also perform dash attacks, and use his shield to block enemy projectile attacks when standing still.
The game's soundtrack was composed by Jun Ishikawa, known for the Kirby series, and emphasizes an action-packed, lighthearted adventure mood. Although Alcahest was never officially released outside Japan, an unofficial fan-made English translation was released in 2002, allowing more players to experience this classic title.
