Star Fox 2 is a rail shooter co-developed by Nintendo EAD and Argonaut Games, originally planned for 1995 Super NES release. Canceled post-completion due to 3D visuals feeling outdated next to PlayStation/Sega Saturn, it used an advanced 3D engine with GSU-2 chip, featured free team selection and nonlinear exploration. Many ideas (lock-on shooting, multiple ships) appeared in 1997’s Star Fox 64. Leaked ROMs with bugs circulated for 20+ years before its official 2017 debut on the Super NES Classic. Set in the Lylat system, players control Fox McCloud and crew to fight Andross and defend galactic peace.
