Shanghai: Great Wall is a 1986 mahjong tile-matching video game sequel published by Activision. The original title first launched on home computer platforms like Amiga, Macintosh, and Apple II GS, then was ported to multiple home consoles including Nintendo Game Boy, NES, and Sega Master System.
In Shanghai: Great Wall, players match and remove all mahjong tiles. The game uses a full 144-tile mahjong set, categorized as dots, bamboos, characters, winds, dragons, seasons, and flowers. The goal is to clear all tiles by matching pairs, but only tiles with at least one free vertical edge are eligible to be matched per turn. Any two season or flower tiles can form a pair. The game ends when no valid moves remain.
Its success spawned multiple sequels, such as Shanghai II: Dragon's Eye.
With easy-to-learn rules and challenging gameplay, Shanghai: Great Wall has attracted countless players and become one of the classic puzzle games.
