Urban Champion is Nintendo's first foray into the 2D fighting genre, released for the NES in 1984. Inspired by the Game & Watch title 'Punch-Out!!', players engage in street brawls with the goal of knocking their opponent into a manhole. The combat system focuses on high and low punches, as well as blocking. Players must manage their 'Stamina' (indicated by numbers) and react to random hazards, such as flowerpots falling from windows or the sudden appearance of a police car which halts the fight. It is a charming and quirky piece of Nintendo history that laid the early groundwork for the fighting game boom.
