Secret of Evermore is a 1995 action RPG developed by Square USA. It follows a boy and his dog, who are teleported to the fantasy world of Evermore after accidentally activating a machine, as they adventure to find their way home.
Players explore four distinct themed regions in Evermore: Prehistoria, Antiqua, Gothica, and Omnitopia, each corresponding to a different historical era. Across these zones, players solve puzzles, defeat enemies, and seek a path back home.
The game features a real-time combat system, letting players control either the boy or his dog in battle. Its unique alchemy system lets players obtain recipes from alchemists, craft magic using two materials, and upgrade magic power through repeated use. Additionally, the dog’s form shifts to match each region’s style: a wolf in Prehistoria, a greyhound in Antiqua, a poodle in Gothica, and a robot dog in Omnitopia.
Notably, Secret of Evermore is the only game Square developed in North America, designed to appeal to Western players. While it shares gameplay similarities with Secret of Mana — such as a ring menu system and real-time combat — it is not part of the Mana series.
It launched in North America on October 1, 1995, followed by releases in Europe and Australia on February 22, 1996. The game has earned a solid reputation among players for its unique mechanics and rich story.
