Phalanx: The Enforce Fighter A-144 is a side-scrolling shooter developed by ZOOM Inc. and published by Kemco. First released in 1991 for Japan’s Sharp X68000, it launched on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in Japan on August 7, 1992, followed by North American and European releases that October. A Game Boy Advance port came out in 2001.
Set in 2279, players control genetically modified pilot Wink Baufield (named Rick in the GBA version), who flies the experimental A/144 Phalanx fighter on "Operation Climax" to investigate and eliminate unknown alien invaders on planet Delia. The game features eight levels, where players traverse diverse environments, battle enemy creatures, and penetrate the enemy base.
Its North American cover art gained widespread attention: it depicts a bearded elderly man in overalls and a fedora playing a banjo, with a futuristic spaceship in the background. This jarring design was intended to stand out among similar space shooters and grab players’ notice, and IGN once named it one of the "best video game covers."
Gameplay follows classic side-scrolling shooter conventions, with players upgrading weapons by collecting items dropped by enemies. It has moderate difficulty, suitable for players who enjoy a challenge. Overall, Phalanx holds a place among retro games thanks to its iconic cover art and classic shooting gameplay.
