Pirates! is an open-world adventure game released by MicroProse in 1987, later ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1991. Players take on the role of a 17th-century pirate captain sailing the Caribbean, chasing wealth, glory and adventure. You can pledge loyalty to colonial powers like Britain, France, Spain or the Netherlands, or operate independently. The game features diverse gameplay including naval combat, land battles, treasure hunting, trading and diplomacy. Players must manage their crew, maintain their ship, recruit new sailors, and boost their reputation through combat and strategy. With a non-linear narrative where player choices shape the story and endings, Pirates! is regarded as one of the pioneers of open-world games and remains beloved by players for its rich content and high degree of freedom.
