Might and Magic III: Isles of Terra is a 1991 role-playing game developed by New World Computing, available on MS-DOS, Amiga, Mac OS, NEC PC-9801, Mega-CD, TurboGrafx-CD and SNES. As the third entry in the Might and Magic series, it continues the story of the previous games, tasking players with once again facing the villain Sheltem—this time on his home base of Terra.
The game uses turn-based gameplay. Players start with a six-character party and can hire up to two more mercenaries at inns. Characters gain experience by defeating enemies, but must visit training grounds to level up. It also features a bank system where players can deposit gold to earn interest over time. The equipment system uses layered attributes: gear type and material affect a character’s attack and defense, with obsidian being the strongest material.
Isles of Terra brought major improvements to graphics and UI, featuring vibrant VGA visuals, rich sound effects, and mouse controls for a better experience. Enemies are visible on the map instead of appearing randomly, and players can attack from afar to boost immersion. Some sections even include voice acting—a rare innovation for its time.
Highly exploratory, the game has distinct regions, diverse monsters, and puzzles to solve. Players must plan routes carefully, fight tough enemies, and enjoy the satisfaction of growing their party’s power. Its high difficulty makes rare upgrade drops especially valuable. Overall, Might and Magic III: Isles of Terra delivers a deeply rewarding exploration experience with its rich content and innovative design.
