Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is an action platformer adapted from the 1994 film of the same name. Developed by Bits Studios and published by Sony Imagesoft, it launched for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). Players take on the role of the monster created by Victor Frankenstein. Rejected by his maker for his hideous appearance, the enraged creature flees and swears vengeance on Victor. Set in Ingolstadt, Bavaria in 1793, the game has players guide the monster through multiple levels, fighting villagers and soldiers who seek to destroy him. The monster’s primary weapon is a wooden stick. Players can swing it to light wall torches, boosting attack power. He also has a special attack that fires blue energy balls, though this costs health. Simple puzzles are scattered throughout, which must be solved to progress. The story loosely follows the film with some changes: for example, Elizabeth’s death scene is cut, but her revival as an enemy boss that players must fight is kept. Overall, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein delivers an interactive take on a classic literary work through its unique story and gameplay mechanics.
