Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards is a 2000 action-platformer developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It launched in Japan on March 24, 2000, followed by releases in North America and Europe. Featuring a 2.5D perspective, players control Kirby across six worlds, battling enemies and bosses while collecting scattered Crystal Shards. The game introduces the "Copy Ability Mix" system: combining seven base abilities creates 28 unique mixed powers, boosting gameplay variety and strategy. The story is set on Ripple Star, home to the fairies. When evil Dark Matter invades to steal the planet’s guardian Crystal, fairy Ribbon flees with it—but the Crystal shatters, scattering pieces everywhere. Kirby meets Ribbon and joins her quest to recover the shards on a new adventure. It supports single-player and up to 4-player multiplayer, with three minigames perfect for playing with friends. Kirby 64 sold roughly 1.07 million copies in Japan and 540,000 in North America. It holds a 77% score on Metacritic, and Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu rated it 32/40. The game was later re-released on the Wii and Wii U Virtual Console, and joined the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service on May 20, 2022.
