Gradius II -GOFER's Ambition- is a 1988 side-scrolling shooter developed by Konami. As the second entry in the Gradius series, it builds on the original with new features and is widely regarded as the franchise’s peak.
Set two years after the first game, the story follows the Bacterion Empire, led by new ruler GOFER, launching another attack on the planet Gradius. Players pilot the Vic Viper starfighter to fend off the invasion and protect their home.
Gameplay retains the core mechanics of the original while introducing a new weapon configuration system. Players can choose from four distinct loadouts, each with unique missiles, double shots, and laser weapons. It also debuted the "Boss Rush" mode—a stage where players fight multiple bosses consecutively—boosting both challenge and replay value.
First released in Japanese arcades on March 24, 1988, Gradius II was ported to the Famicom (NES) on December 16 of the same year. The Famicom version used Konami’s proprietary VRC4 chip to enhance graphics, which also prevented a release outside Japan.
The game earned critical acclaim upon launch and is considered one of the best Gradius titles. Its detailed visuals, deep weapon system, and tough level design secured its place in shoot ’em up history.
Overall, Gradius II -GOFER's Ambition- stands as a classic side-scrolling shooter thanks to its outstanding design and innovative gameplay, and it remains beloved by fans today.
