Hong Kong 97 is a Super Nintendo game developed and published by Japan’s HappySoft in 1995. Known for its shoddy quality and absurd plot, it’s regarded as a classic parody game. Set during the 1997 Hong Kong handover, the story follows the Hong Kong government hiring "Mr. Chan," a relative of Bruce Lee and expert killer, to eliminate 1.2 billion people flooding in from mainland China. Meanwhile, the Chinese government revives the late Deng Xiaoping as a giant weapon to fight Mr. Chan. Gameplay is simple: players control Mr. Chan to shoot and dodge enemies falling from the top of the screen, including spitting civilians and police officers. Bullets only fire upward; hitting enemies triggers a mushroom cloud explosion, leaving flickering corpses. The game also features green circular objects (instant game over on contact) and spinning syringes (grant temporary invincibility). After defeating a set number of enemies, the final boss—a giant Deng Xiaoping head—appears, and the game restarts once beaten. Background images are random black-and-white visuals, including Mao Zedong propaganda posters, Guilin landscapes, Asia Television logos, and Coca-Cola China trademarks. The game offers Japanese, Chinese, and English language modes, but non-Japanese subtitles are riddled with errors. Its only music is the first two lines of "I Love Beijing Tiananmen" on loop, with no other sound effects. Due to its poor quality and absurd content, Hong Kong 97 is often cited by critics as one of the worst games ever made.
