Final Fantasy II is a fantasy RPG released by Square (now Square Enix) for the Nintendo Famicom in 1988, the second entry in the Final Fantasy series. It follows four youths whose home is destroyed and parents killed by the Palamecian Empire; three survivors join the rebellion to complete missions like mastering new magic/weapons, destroying the enemy’s superweapon, and rescuing their leader, ultimately defeating the empire and emperor to save the world. It introduced a proficiency system where character stats grow based on weapon and magic types used, replacing traditional EXP leveling, plus iconic series elements like chocobos and recurring character Cid. Since the original Final Fantasy II and III only launched in Japan, Final Fantasy IV was released in North America as "Final Fantasy II" to avoid confusion. The game has been ported and remade multiple times, with the latest remakes for iOS and Android launching globally in 2010 and 2012 respectively.
