Formation Z is a side-scrolling shooter developed by Japanese studio Jaleco and released in 1984. Set in 2701 AD, players control the transforming robot Ixpel on a mission to stop an alien superweapon from invading Earth.
Ixpel has two forms: Robot Mode and Fighter Mode. In Robot Mode, players can walk, jump on the ground, and shoot forward, diagonally up and diagonally down. In Fighter Mode, Ixpel can fly freely in the air, but players must monitor fuel consumption and land in time when fuel runs out to avoid crashing. Players need to switch between the two forms flexibly based on terrain and enemy positions to tackle various challenges.
The game's weapon system includes the Pulse Laser and the "Big Bang" cannon. The Pulse Laser is the standard rapid-fire weapon. The "Big Bang" cannon requires charging, can pierce multiple enemies, and is especially critical for fighting large enemies and bosses.
Formation Z first launched on arcades, then was ported to multiple platforms such as MSX and the NES (Famicom). In recent years, it was re-released in Japan via the Wii Virtual Console service, and launched on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 on March 19, 2020 as part of Hamster Corporation's "Arcade Archives" series.
The game features varied level designs. Players fight across Earth's terrains like grasslands and deserts, and eventually head to outer space for a final showdown with the alien superweapon. Each level is full of challenges, testing players' operation skills and strategic thinking.
As a classic shooter, Formation Z has left a deep impression on players with its unique transformation mechanic and diverse gameplay. Both nostalgic fans and new players can experience the charm of side-scrolling shooters in this game.
