Dungeon Master is a revolutionary RPG developed by FTL Games in 1987. First released for the Atari ST, it was later ported to Amiga, MS-DOS, SNES and other platforms. It features a first-person pseudo-3D dungeon setting, where players control a 4-character party to move and fight in real time on a grid-based map.
With an intuitive mouse-supported interface, players can perform actions like moving, attacking and casting spells by clicking icons. Its real-time combat system requires strategic tactics such as the "two-step dodge" to sidestep enemy attacks and counter quickly.
For character progression, it replaces the traditional XP system with a proficiency mechanic. Characters improve class proficiency (warrior, priest, wizard, ninja, etc.) by using different weapons and skills.
Boasting outstanding audio-visual effects, Dungeon Master is one of the first games to use 3D sound, letting players locate enemies by sound for greater immersion.
The story follows protagonist Theron, who leads his party deep into the dungeon to find and defeat an evil wizard and rescue the kidnapped king's daughter.
A huge commercial and critical success, Dungeon Master is regarded as one of the best and most influential games of its genre, with a profound impact on later 3D dungeon crawler RPGs.
