BlaZeon is a side-scrolling shooter developed by A.I Co., Ltd. and published by Atlus. First released for arcades in 1992, it was ported to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) the same year.
In the game, players pilot the Garland TFF-01 fighter, equipped with a Beam Vulcan laser cannon and the Tranquilander device. The Tranquilander lets players capture specific enemy robots called Bio-Cyborgs, gaining control of their weapons and special abilities. This unique mechanic adds strategy and variety to the classic shooter formula.
The game features five levels filled with diverse enemies and challenges. Players must use captured Bio-Cyborgs to adapt to different combat scenarios, leveraging their unique traits to overcome obstacles.
Set in a futuristic world, the story follows the Imperial Earth Army, which returns from an expedition and conquers Earth using giant Bio-Cyborg bioweapons to oppress its people. Players take on the role of a rebel pilot flying the Garland TFF-01 to fight the empire and free the planet.
The SNES port includes several adjustments: it removes the arcade version’s animated opening and two-player co-op mode, but adds difficulty settings and fighter color options. Some level designs and enemy placements were also modified to suit home console performance and player experience.
Overall, BlaZeon stands out among shooters for its distinctive capture-and-use enemy gameplay, delivering a fresh and engaging experience for players.
