The Atlas: Renaissance Voyager is a historical simulation game developed by Artdink. First launched in 1991 for NEC PC-9801, FM-TOWNS and MS-DOS, it was released for Super Famicom by Pack-In-Video on March 24, 1995. Set in the 15th-century Age of Discovery, players take on the role of an explorer commissioned by the King of Portugal, tasked with exploring uncharted areas 1,000 miles south of Portugal within five years. Players can interact with local residents, collect data on geography, flora, fauna and culture, and bring the information back to Portugal. In-game events like wars and plagues affect regional political stability, while trade and exploration also impact the game's economy. Through trade, players may trigger plagues and infectious diseases that reduce town populations and even cause the loss of vital trade ships. The game's map closely matches the parts of the world known in the 15th century. Encyclopedias, world maps, local specialties and even various animals can be found in cities. Strange life forms and primitive civilizations are randomly distributed across the map and documented in an encyclopedia covering the entire game world. Its sequel, The Atlas II, was released in 1993. Set in the 16th century, players control the original explorer's son, discovering new cities and operating inland transport routes between them.
