Gameplay
Game Overview
Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 was built by Nintendo R&D2 and launched on Game Boy Advance in Japan on December 14, 2001, reaching North America in February 2002. It is the handheld remake of the SNES Super Mario World, still set in Dinosaur Land, still about rescuing Princess Peach from Bowser and freeing the seven Yoshi trapped in eggs. The cartridge also bundles a remake of the Mario Bros. arcade game supporting one to four players.
Core Gameplay
Ninety-six exits are the backbone: nearly every course hides a second exit and a key and keyhole, and collecting them opens Star Road and the Special Zone. Power-ups carry over from the original: Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, Cape Feather and Starman, with the cape giving real flight and a spin attack. Four Yoshi colours gain different abilities from holding coloured shells: red spits fireballs, blue flies, yellow ground-pounds. Collecting all five Dragon Coins in every level triggers a cutscene and turns the whole map to its autumn palette.
What Changed from the SNES Original
The two-player alternating mode is gone, so Luigi became a selectable character instead: he jumps higher and further, runs slower with worse traction, bounces his fireballs higher, and while riding Yoshi he spits enemies back out rather than swallowing them instantly. Saving is no longer tied to clearing a ghost house, fortress or castle; you can save anywhere, and lives, coins and the reserve item are kept. The life cap rises from 99 to 999. Yoshi eggs now hatch different items by colour: green gives a mushroom, yellow a Starman, red a Fire Flower, blue a Cape Feather. Because the GBA has no X and Y buttons, you cannot fire fireballs while carrying a shell or a grab block.
Game Tips
- Ninety-six exits across the map, with hidden exits and keyholes driving the whole collectible structure
- Luigi is selectable: higher and longer jumps, at the cost of speed and traction
- Save anywhere, with lives, coins, current form and the reserve item all recorded
- Yoshi eggs hatch by colour: green mushroom, yellow Starman, red Fire Flower, blue Cape Feather
- The Cape Feather gives real flight and a spin attack, and anchors most speedrun routes
- Collecting all five Dragon Coins in every level triggers a cutscene and the autumn map palette
- Bundled remake of the Mario Bros. arcade game for one to four players
Frequently Asked Questions
The alternating two-player mode was dropped, making Luigi a selectable character with his own handling. Saves are now possible anywhere, the life cap rose to 999, Yoshi eggs give different items by colour, you can no longer re-enter castles before beating Bowser, and you cannot shoot fireballs while holding a shell because the GBA lacks X and Y buttons. The palette was also brightened for the unlit GBA screen.
Four to five hours to follow the main path. Clearing all ninety-six exits, collecting every Dragon Coin and finishing the Special Zone usually runs past ten hours.
No. It uses non-volatile storage that survives without power. Only carts with a real-time clock, such as Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, actually need a battery swap.
Mario is faster with better traction, which suits speedruns and precise platforming. Luigi jumps higher and further and bounces his fireballs higher, which helps in jumping sections and reaching hidden exits.
No. The levels and campaign are the same, and the GBA version adds save-anywhere and extra hint blocks, making it the friendlier place to start.
