Ardy Lightfoot is a 2D side-scrolling platformer developed by ASCII, released in 1993 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in Japan, followed by North American and European launches in 1994. The game follows Ardy, an anthropomorphic fox, who sets off on a journey with his blue companion Pec to find the seven crystal shards of the broken sacred rainbow. Legend says whoever gathers all the shards will be granted one wish. However, the evil King Visconti already holds one shard and has sent his subordinates Beecroft, Catry, and others to hunt down the rest. In gameplay, Ardy can use Pec as a weapon, throwing him to attack enemies, or have Pec transform into useful forms like a hot air balloon or a rock-breaking tool. If Ardy is hit by an enemy, Pec will disappear, and players must find treasure chests to retrieve him. Without Pec, Ardy can attack enemies by bouncing with his tail and take temporary cover behind transparent mirrors to protect himself. The game features 17 levels with diverse settings including forests, caves, and cities. In each level, Ardy needs to collect stars; accumulating a certain number grants extra lives. The game also has multiple powerful boss enemies that require skill and strategy to defeat. For the North American version, developers modified some content. For example, Ardy’s "idle" pose was removed, as were tied-up, crying animals in the forest level background. Additionally, in the sixth level "Eaten!", the scene where Catry dies from acid corrosion was changed to her simply being knocked unconscious. Ardy Lightfoot is loved by players for its rich gameplay and cartoon-style graphics. Electronic Gaming Monthly praised its large levels, varied character abilities, and impressive boss designs, but noted it requires patience due to its high difficulty, giving it a 7.2 out of 10. GamePro also gave positive reviews, highlighting its varied gameplay and colorful visuals. Super Play awarded it an overall score of 83%, commending its graphics, animation, and sound effects. Although the game ends with "To be continued", no sequel to Ardy Lightfoot was ever released.
